Ignored on her birthday by her husband and son, Bunty Felse takes herself out to celebrate—and finds herself in mortal danger.
On the eve of her forty-first birthday, Bunty Felse is overcome with depression. The weather is dreary; her only child, Dominic, fails to call with birthday greetings; and her husband, George, arrives home only to announce that he has to leave for London immediately to attend to urgent police business. After almost twenty years as a detective’s wife, Bunty doesn’t protest or complain; she sends George off with a swiftly packed case.
To shake off her black mood, Bunty goes out for a solitary evening walk. She stops at the local pub for a drink and accepts a lift home from a sad young man whose troubles draw her out of her own and makes her feel compelled to help him. But as soon as the car door closes, the driver reveals a dark secret that could lead them both to early graves. Will she manage to escape the mysterious fugitive before it’s too late?

My review has a couple of spoilers, some relating to events in the first third of the book and others which are fairly predictable based on Ms Peter's overall writing and the fact that there are many more books in the series. For the first books in the series, I had been hoping for one about Bunty. Now that i have read it, I am disappointed, mainly by 2 things.
In the early chapters of the book, someone misbehaves towards Bunty to the extent that multiple laws are broken and she is terrified. Bunty then decides to understand the other person's motivations and predicament and immediately forgives them. I was been brought up to do the same thing, and I now think that this opens the door for a person to be mistreated in hundreds of big and small ways. It's very disheartening to see Bunty, and archetypal good-wife and good-mother make that choice. If my daughter becomes a teenager with a hunger for mystery novels, the way I was, I will steer her away from this one.
The second thing that I disliked about this book is the amount of time main characters spend in mortal terror. There are many more Felse Family books, and Ms. Peters isn't in the habit of killing off main characters. So, I'm not really interested in watching the characters almost get killed half a dozen times. I find it boring. Other people may have different preferences here.
I am in a similar stage of life as Bunty in this book. The most enjoyable feature, for me, was her reflections on early-middle-age. There remains something quite human and likable in her characterizations and reflections, even in this book.

The Grass Widow Tale The Felse Investigations Book 7 edition by Ellis Peters Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
I love mysteries and often can not find books by authors I like in the local library system so I like finding them this way - cheap books even with the high shipping costs
This story goes much deeper than usual. It touches on a sensitivity that not every one experiences or understands. As well as a great read it is almost spiritual in its profound acknowledgement of the diversity of the human heart.
A new-to-me book by and old friend, Ellis Peters. Lovely!
After I read one of this Inspector Felse series by Ellis Peters, I just had to acquire and read all 13 of them. They fit the genre beautifully, yet manage to be unique enough to stay in my memory. Each book involves the Felse family, but manages somehow to center around other characters, most of whom are well-developed and intriguing.
Finally a story featuring Bunty. It was every bit as absorbing as the other books by Ellis Peters.
The plot is totally unrealistic. I do not suspect that a police detective's wife can outwit criminals anymore a doctor's wife can successfully do surgery. But it sure was fun to read her clever thought processes. If it were any other writer, I probably would not have finished the book. But Mrs. Peters' skill with words kept me engaged. Could be a good movie if anyone needs a new scenario. ;)
Most detective stories start dispassionately, with the detective intellectually investigating a crime that has already happened to someone else. Not this one!
(Inspector George Felse's wife) Bunty, facing a milestone birthday alone, goes out for a drink, meets, and is kidnapped by a man who may be a murderer. Even if written in the third person, this story is first person all the way (Bunty), from her first attempts to escape, to her growing insights into the man's character, to her unraveling of the crime, to the final resolution.
In the Felse books, we hear often than Bunty is formidably intelligent, and insightful, and here she comes into her own. With her unique voice and a gripping plot, this may be the best in the entire series.
